Established in 1846 it is the first Church built inland in the County of Essex. It was built in the village of Maidstone Cross where one of the largest settlements of Irish Catholic families existed and where their descendants remain today. In 2000 a large Celtic Cross was erected in St. Mary's Cemetery to commemorate the Irish immigrants who built the Church. It remains a beacon of the Catholic faith in the area.
